Sonic the Hedgehog’s Crazy History
All video game fanatics know and love the notable video game character, Sonic the Hedgehog. With his multiple video game titles and appearances, merchandise, animated series, and other pop culture highlights, Sonic has become one of the most popular video game characters of all time.
Sonic was introduced to the world in 1991, when Sega was looking for a character and video game series to rival Nintendo’s popular character Mario. After multiple designs were submitted, reviewed and crafted, Sonic’s design, created by Naoto Ōshima of Sega, was ultimately chosen.
Sonic’s overall appearance drew inspiration from a variety of sources. His blue color was chosen to match Sega’s logo and oddly enough, his boots were inspired from Michael Jackson’s boots!
Sonic’s friendly appearance in the American market was not his original appearance however. His edgy, yet likable, personality was matched with a rugged exterior including fangs in the Japanese market. In order to appeal to the American market, it was suggested that Sonic’s appearance be a bit ‘toned down’. After an initial debate, all agreed that Sonic needed an amiable but edgy tone – and it worked!
Sonic made his official historic debut in the game titled Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. In this groundbreaking game, Sonic’s rival Dr. Robotnik (later known as Dr. Eggman) was also introduced. After Sega saw a massive success from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic became the company’s mascot and was featured in multiple games, including:
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic 3
- Sonic & Knuckles
- Sonic Adventure
- Sonic Blast
- And many more
Sonic’s Friends and Foes
Throughout the Sonic the Hedgehog series and gameplay, gamers meet and control a variety of Sonic’s friends and foes. Most notably, Mile “Tails” Prower is a two-tailed fox and Sonic’s best friend. Tails has worked side-by-side with Sonic in multiple games and also starred in his own various games throughout the years.
Amy Rose is another hedgehog, a pink girl hedgehog to be exact, who claims to be Sonic’s girlfriend. Unlike the other characters, Amy does not have any particular powers, so she uses a ‘hammer’ as an attack and defensive mechanism.
As for foes, unfortunately Sonic has racked up a large list of them! Starting of course with Dr. Eggman. Dr. Eggman is known as a mad scientist trying to turn all of the animals across the land into robots. Clearly, Sonic is trying to stop this nonsense from happening!
Sonic’s Fame and Fortune
Over the years, Sonic has starred in multiple games and also in various animated TV series, starting with the popular Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog in 1983. Series after series, Sonic also made multiple appearances in the Disney animated feature, Wreck-It Ralph. In addition, Sonic has enjoyed a multitude of merchandise opportunities from t-shirts to toys to print media.
